What to Expect | Film + Digital Portrait Sessions

Your session is more than just photos, it’s about capturing you in this time of your life in a way that’s true to you. I shoot with a hybrid approach, blending both digital and film photography. This gives you a gallery that feels both timeless and modern, with the ease and speed of digital paired with the nostalgic, unique quality of film. Use this guide so you know what to expect and can plan from start to finish.

Step One: Choosing a Location

Colorado is home to so many phenomenal locations for photo sessions both urban and nature based. I keep this Location Guide up to date with some of my favorite locations but here are some of my recent sessions as well for more visual inspiration.

Things to keep in mind when choosing your location:

  • Permitting and Regulations

    • Leave no Trace is crucial to maintaining a clean and healthy outdoors in Colorado, also many locations in Colorado require a permit. I handle this portion but it does take a few days or up to a month for some locations.

  • Accessibility and Level of Activity

    • Some locations require a small amount of walking or hiking, things to consider if you’re in heels or have a recent injury or illness that prohibit activity.

  • Pets

    • Thinking of bringing your four legged bestie? Some locations restrict or prohibit dogs so let me know and I can point those out to you. Also it’s always recommended to bring a trusted friend or family member to watch them if needed.

  • Secluded/More Public

    • If you’re feeling anxious or self conscious let me know and I can suggest a less busy spot or we can get away from the crowds a bit more.

Step Two: Choosing an Outfit (or Two!)

Pinterest is an amazing resource for outfit inspiration, I keep this board up to date with new pins for all types of sessions, location types and seasons so you are sure to find some great inspiration there. I recommend a more formal look and a more casual look. Since sessions take up to an hour we have time to change.

Step Three: During Your Session

During your session, you’ll notice that I work with multiple cameras, switching between digital and film throughout our time together. This hybrid process allows me to capture the same moment in different ways:

  • Digital gives me the flexibility to move quickly, adjust instantly to changing light, and keep the flow natural and relaxed.

  • Film encourages us to slow down, pause, and be intentional, these frames often result in some of the most timeless and emotive images in your gallery.

You may see me pause to change cameras or take a little extra time to compose a film shot. That’s all part of the process, and it creates a rhythm that balances both efficiency and artistry. Digital ensures nothing is missed, while film adds depth and character.

Throughout your session, I’ll guide you so the transitions feel seamless. Most find the mix of quick, candid digital moments and thoughtful, cinematic film portraits creates a gallery that feels complete, varied, and true to them.

Step Four: Your Session is Done, Now What?

After your session, I will send off your 35mm film to a professional processing lab to be processed and scanned. I will also start editing your digital files. You will then receive:

  • A cohesive gallery of both film scans and digital images, edited and curated for consistency.

  • Film images scanned by a professional lab, ensuring they seamlessly integrate with digital photographs.Note: These film scans can be printed up to size 8x10 in high resolution.
